Why Do I Remember This?
It happened again.
Watching summaries of Apple's latest announcements made me remember Konfabulator.
Back in the early 2000s, before widgets were built into operating systems, Konfabulator let you place small floating tools directly on your desktop: clocks, weather, notes, system monitors.
At the time, it felt futuristic.
In 2005, Yahoo acquired it, turned it into Yahoo Widgets, and eventually it faded away.
Not because the idea was bad.
Because it was early.
Back then, the desktop wasn't a place for glanceable information. We still opened apps for everything. Notifications weren't part of daily life yet.
Now, twenty years later, macOS Tahoe brings back almost the exact same concept.
Same purpose. Almost the same look and feel.
And I don't know why I remember things like this.
The internet loves resurrecting things it once left for dead — I watched it happen with Digg's unlikely comeback.
A twenty-year gap between the same idea is really just proof that time doesn't move in a straight line.
Konfabulator wasn't wrong, only early — which is its own version of work that finds its moment years later.
